BAKING IN A FRAGMENTED WORLD
Session 4, 24 May 2024
The global pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have served as a magnifying glass for the geopolitical and economic headwinds the world is currently experiencing. Neither has the global economy fully recovered from the shock of the pandemic, nor has the war in Ukraine come to an end. For many observers, these events mark the end of globalisation and the return of geopolitics and fragmentation. Others argue that the stability of the international system has already been replaced by a world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. The year 2024 is unlikely to change this view: ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, economic headwinds in China, and an election year epitomised by the US presidential race.
