Biography
Els Bedert is Director Product Policy & Sustainability at EuroCommerce, the European voice for retail and wholesale trade, which she joined in 2012. With her team, she is leading EuroCommerce activities in a range of policies aimed at improving product safety, quality and integrity for food and non-food products and including the farm to fork strategy and broader sustainability issues such as deforestation, due diligence, packaging, food waste and climate.
Previously, Ms Bedert worked in the European Commission’s Directorate for Enlargement, as team leader responsible for TAIEX assistance on EU legislation in the agriculture, veterinary, phytosanitary and food safety. She also dedicated a large part of her career to development cooperation to improve food safety and food security for livestock keepers in Africa.

The presentation will provide an insight on the EU retail sector commitments, needs and challenges in the sustainability transition, with special focus on reducing carbon emissions. The speaker will outline how we can shape a greener future for retail together: From eco-friendly practices, supply chain cooperation and innovations, to consumer information. It will include recent findings from joint research by EuroCommerce and McKinsey & Company, examples of best practices and dedicated initiatives from company or association level.
